Millions of people around the world struggle with sight-threatening diseases. Those that directly affect the neural retina include Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, and hundreds of subtly distinct forms of vision loss that fall under the umbrella term Inherited Retinal Diseases. The Iowa Neuroscience Institute is committed to fundamental research to uncover the molecular mechanisms that cause damage to the retina and to clinical research to develop treatments such as gene therapy and transplantation of retinal cells to save and restore sight.
